Mom Update, July 19, 2010, Monday later in day

Thanks to everyone who pitched in to pull the slack today. Claudia can't see mom for a week since Claudia has a sinus infection---so Anthony and Con and the kids and Claudia's family can't see her either. (Doctor said that Vent Patients are highly susceptible to sickness and that, if the healthy family members in Claudia and Anthony's family's are still healthy in 3 days, they can see mom---but anyone who is or was sick can't see her for a week). Anyone who can come to see mom and run one of her exercise drills or just stimulate her is greatly appreciated. Dad and Aunt Carol can go see mom later in the afternoon on Tuesday. Donna is going from 11-1:00. I have student teachers again tomorrow and a proposal to write for work so I am not sure when I will get there.

Mom did well today. I did her Physical Therapy this morning early and she really had a look of concentration on her face as I did so! Unfortunately, her left hand hurt her when I manipulated it but, on the good side, she said, "OW!!" (or mouthed it) 10 times on her thumb and another 10 on her ring finger.

John sat with her and talked and kept her company this afternoon, along with dad and I later on. John and I did the "Household Sounds" CD with her and she seemed to respond a lot to the blow dryer sound! Then we did aromatherapy but no real response to that. I had her listen to Mama Mia on her IPOD as well. She moved her right arm and wiped her mouth on command 2 times. She moved both feet and her right hand too. Lots of facial expressions today!! She also looked like she was trying to blow out her mouth---this is new since the aneurysm but something she did a lot before it.

THE MEDICINE MYSTERY IS SOLVED!!! PTL!!!
A male nurse did come into mom's room and gave her a medicine that is used for both Parkinson's Disease and Diabetes... Mom had evidently had only a few doses of it when her sugar level was up (she doesn't have diabetes but levels were high on and off at North Shore) as a preventative!!! The confusion came from the head nurses at the nurse's station on Saturday evening who I spoke to---maybe they were new??? But they didn't handle the situation correctly on my end during our conversation and this caused all the confusion. Mom is not getting that medication any more.

This evening, Lenny and Dad and Aunt Carol went to see mom. Lenny did her Physical Therapy and reports that when he did her left hand, she said, "OW!" audibly but low. Then she also mouthed it as well. She fought Lenny when he was moving her right hand alot!! She moved against his manipulations. She opened her eyes 3 or 4 times today when shaken.

Oops! I got in the shower and realized that I left out the verse that is on my heart tonight....

"The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength." Psalm 23:1-3
