Hello Everyone,
MOM OPENED HER EYES TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!! PTL
Thank you so much for all the prayers...they are working. While I know that these e-mails are too much information for some of you, others ask for the details...I am trying to learn how to set up a blog that people can visit instead but have no time yet to figure it out...so in the meantime, e-mail it is.
Mom had the vent tube removed from her mouth, throat...today and had a tracheotomy put in instead this morning. The procedure took about 30 minutes. She came through it wonderfully. PTL
This will enable her to be more comfortable and it also should alleviate the infection in her trachea.
She still has the bladder infection and tracheal bronchitis but her fever is down to 100 now today.
It seems inevitable that she will need a shunt to drain fluid from the brain sometime next week. It is not noticeable from the outside and she will have it forever. It drains the fluid from her head down her throat to the stomach and out the body. Right now, she has a drain in the top of her head (on the outside). The doctors would like to see how she does without the drain before doing the shunt...but she has to be awake enough to complete a neurological evaluation first.
Tomorrow, Mom will have the PEG (feeding tube inserted in stomach) procedure at 7:00 a.m. It should take about 20 minutes to complete. This will allow her to not have the nasal feeding tube any more...which again, will be more comfortable.
The best news today is that Mom opened her eyes!!! Nine times to be exact. Though she is unable to keep them open long due to the sedation, antibiotic, tired state after surgeries/procedures...she did, indeed, open them. When they were opened, she looked alert and was definitely speaking to us through her gaze---it wasn't an empty stare---there was emotion in her eyes. While she is still not able to talk---due to the trach-- this is BIG progress.
She still moves the right side more than the left, though the doctors report that she moves the left with pain stimulus.
KEEP PRAYING!!!! We can't thank you all enough for this.
Some have asked how this all happened and when---last week, Tuesday, June 1, Mom and Dad had just returned from a long weekend upstate at the trailer. They picked up Aunt Sophie (93 years old) on the way back. All 3 were home about 45 minutes and had just sat down to eat dinner when Mom suddenly complained of an excruciating headache---within minutes, she feel over (Aunt Sophie caught her!!!), went unconscious, had a seizure...the ambulance crew came quickly and brought her to the hospital.
As I said...keep praying.
Thanks and Much Love
Kathy
