Mom Update, June 21, 2010, Monday

Mom is being moved to the 5th floor Respiratory Care Unit. Her doctor (neurosurgeon) has reported that he has done all he can for her medically and that she is ready to move out of the NSCU. The doctor said that, one week ago, he could not give us a positive prognosis, but today, he feels differently. He said that mom has made "tremendous progress" over the last week. She was originally on the vent at a #12 (which was not good since the worst side leans toward a 10) but she is now at a #5!!!! She is without the vent 4-5 hours per day and breathing on her own.She is responding to commands on the right side of her body and moving well, but is still sluggish on the left side though she is able to respond to pain and move it. Each day, the doctor reports, mom has made steady progress. At this point, he feels that her age and blood pressure (high) problems are causing a delayed awakening but that this is typical and normal. She continues to open her eyes for the doctor as well.

The neurosurgeon said, "One week ago, I couldn't say this, but--I know she is in there now! She just needs to wake up"

Dr. --- is her respiratory care doctor now. We don't know how long she will be in the new unit at the hospital. The doctor is going to try to get her off the trach and vent. The Social Worker in Respiratory Care is ---- and is assisting the doctor in her care. Visiting hours are the same in this unit as before.

The nurse faxed all paperwork to the Rehab Center today so she is set to be moved there whenever she is ready to be moved (which seems like sometime this week).

KEEP PRAYING!!!! THANKS TO ALL!!! MUCH LOVE KATH

"…The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
James 5:16
