Mom Update, June 29, 2010, Tuesday

Mom was sleepy when I saw her today...not out of it but sleepy. I was able to rouse her by wiping a cold, wet towel on her face. I did her physical therapy with her and some aromatherapy as well. She tracked the vanilla and the frankincense again and flared her nostrils slightly. She also grimaced a bit when I initially worked on her left leg--this is good because it is the side she doesn't use much--so it shows feeling in that side. Her left arm and hand continue to be swollen (edema) despite the lasix/lasics?? (not sure of spelling). Claudia played sound bingo --- let mom listen to sounds and then labeled them -- and mom opened her eyes for this! Claudia also sang Willie Nelson songs from the CD she bought her too. When the nurse came to give mom her meds (vancamyacin and supplements), I sang "Just a spoon full of sugar" from Mary Poppins to her and she raised her eyesbrows and put on a pleasant face. (Mom was such a storyteller and performer---she loved to sing all the time when we were little! She loved Mary Poppins).

While dad and Anthony were there earlier in the day, they spoke to a respiratory doctor who said mom was doing well and that they were working with her when dad and Ant arrived.

Still trying to gather the things we need for the tactile stimulation kit.

Even though days like this, when she isn't so alert are frustrating in ways to me, I try to remember that this isn't about me and how I feel; it's about her well-being...and then I remember that my purpose now is to make her life more pleasant in what ever way I can during this season of her life. That, in itself, is quite a gift and a privilege....especially after all she has given me already.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters," Psalm 23:2
