Mom Update, June 30, 2010, Wednesday

Mom had a GREAT day! Maybe the best one yet.Dad's cousin, Angelo, and JoAnn (his daughter) and Madeline (his wife) visited mom today from 12-2ish (then left for lunch and returned). For you family members who know Angelo (aka Jr. Bonura), need I say more??? Angelo is a lively, loud, funny person who refused to give up on Mom's not opening her eyes. The three first talked to mom, reviewed her sound bingo sounds, and played music for the first 45 minutes of their visit...and then Angelo began to sing to mom---he sang, "Come meet the METS" song and suddenly, mom opened her eyes WIDELY, pointed a finger at him, and mouthed something!! She kept her eyes open widely for about 15-20 minutes straight---a record breaker!! Mom tired out and they then left for lunch. (Needless to say, Angelo has found his call in life--waking people out of comas---the nurses said they'd send him from room to room singing. Dad said that he wants to either not let Angelo go home or, at the very least, record his voice!!)Mom's friends, Flo and Maureen, also visited her during the lunch break. They read to her, sang, touched, loved on her, talked...mom MOVED HER RIGHT FOOT MANY TIMES while they visited with her!!! Mom also moved her head, right arm and leg (took Madeline's hand in hers to her own face), feet, grimaced (and did this once when I was trying to do her arm physical therapy...she pulled it away slowly and made a face of disgust), mouthed what seemed like words at times... When I left today with Dad, it looked like mom waved goodbye to us!! And when I said, "I love you" as I left---it looked like she mouthed, "I love you" back.Shelby, the speech therapist, worked with Mom today again. She reported that mom was semi alert at that time and that she was able to get mom to groan and make sounds!! I LOVE SHELBY!!! She is as passionate about what she does as Claudia and I are!! Crazy!! but so great! The respiratory therapist said that they tried to wean mom from the vent again on MONDAY....yucky day for mom that day....bad day...sleepy day. The attempt was not successful. We have a Family Care Plan meeting on Thursday, July 8 in the morning. Hopefully, we will have enough data about mom to get all the therapists on board with the therapy. So pray.Lenny and dad are there tonight while I am at work.Mom's left arm is still really swollen---I am going to buy a piece of foam and shape it in an incline to use to incline her arm. I am overwhelmed by her day today...just when we needed hope, she gave us some again. Thanks for all the prayers--please don't let up on it now. xoxoxox Kath
