Boy...just when you think the paperwork and red tape stuff is over...more comes your way. Dad and I spent weeks preparing to apply for Medicaid for Mom. Friday, for example, we spent the day compiling banking statements for both mom and dad from 2006 through present...then we had to copy all of them in their entirety...we also met with dad and mom's lawyer 2 times to amend the irrevocable family trust (sounds impressive...like we have family money or something!! HAHAHA!!) Well, at 10:15 last night I received a phone call from dad, who had just managed to listen to the day's voice mail messages and one was from the Rehab facility saying that the new insurance policy will not cover the daily copay of $140 per day. Aggravation...I made phone calls all over and, thank God, it all worked out. It was a matter of lack of communication between parties. Bottom line...check your insurance policies to see if it covers the standard, daily copayment that accrues after Medicare pays for the firs 20 days in a rehab/nursing facility. Medicaid picks up in full on day 101...so you need coverage from day 21-100. I found a Medicare Supplemental Plan (Plan N) through Empire Blue Cross that covers this copayment.
Enough boring stuff. MOM continues to have wonderful days of progress. Each day, she seems to maintain past progress as well as make future progress. Here are today's events:
When Anthony, Anthony Michael and Sam (her son, grandson and granddaughter) arrived, they did Physical Therapy and practiced the "Wipe your chin" command, along with combing mom's hair and holding her hand and talking to her. During this time, she opened her eyes on her own 1 time widely and many times when shaken. She followed the command to "Wipe your chin" 2 times alone. She continues to make new faces as well.
(I forgot to mention that, yesterday, when I arrived at 8 a.m., I found mom in a new sleep position...her leg (right) was bent --- this is big because she usually remains still when sleeping now. She also kept her eyes open for 63 seconds yesterday!!!)
When she did therapy with the speech therapist, she said, "Oooohhh" in response to pain. She responded to pain on her heels (pin pricks...sort of). She kept her eyes open 3 MINUTES!!!!!. She brought the wipe to her chin independently and tried to wipe her face by rubbing her face against the wipe back and forth (can't plan the movement in her hand it seems yet). This is good motor planning (supposedly the place where the aneurysm occured).
With me, I said, "Ma, Ma..." she mouthed, "What?" 4 xs!!!
I moved her left arm and she mouthed, "Ow" 8 xs.
I do a "mock walking" exercise when she is in the geri chair where I stand at her feet and lean my legs on the bottom of her feet/heels and rotate pushing on her foot bottom/heels as though walking and I tell her we are going for a walk. She moves her mouth alot at this time. She also said, "Ow" once.
With Claudia and Ava, mom did "Household Sounds Bingo" sounds, following commands...they played music for mom on the IPOD docking station and when playing the soundtrack from MOMMA MIA, mom began to move her feet to the music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Claudia spoke to the physical therapist, about a wedge for her arm and about teaching the CNAs how to float her feet and place her arm in an inclined position.
Ava drove pop to Oceanside to drop off papers for the woman who is helping us apply for Medicaid also.
The progress continues...though to look at her, you wouldn't always think so...
