MOM MOVED HER LEGS TODAY ON HER OWN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 10 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Claudia was doing physical therapy with her this morning and while working on mom's hands, mom began to move her feet and her legs right off the bed at the knee!!! The messages are being sent around her body---or so it seems!
The trach replacement yesterday was standard procedure that is done once every 2 months. No problems there that warranted the change.
Dad, Anthony, Anthony Michael and Samantha visited mom next today but only briefly because they were on their way to bring dad to the eye doctor. (Cataract surgery scheduled in the future; today was a check up). Donna came and worked with mom early in the afternoon today. Then Danny and Barbara came to see mom around 4 to sing an early Happy Birthday to her....
I saw mom from 4:20-7:20 p.m. and she was alert---kept opening her eyes consistently with some 5-10 second lapses in between for 45 minutes!!!! I did her physical therapy and IPOD music therapy (Chicago soundtrack and Best of the 40s)...she enjoyed the music as always. My friend, Sister Mary Ann, says she is sure that when mom wakes, she'll be singing!! I also noticed that the music brought mom's Tidal Volume on her vent up to 566 (once it remains at 600 for a while, she moves to the next level). Mom followed commands to touch her head, nose and mouth...but only once tonight. Dad and Claudia and I were with her tonight together and Claudia had mom using a small plastic bar to pull and push and give resistance in her right arm and hand. Mom did it! She also said, "Ow" and "What?" as well. She had her eyes open for 2 minutes and 15 seconds for us too!
It appears that, perhaps the noticeable change in mom's behavior since last Friday is due to her appearing to have moved from the fluid, dreamlike, womb-like world she has been in (perceptive coma state) to a more alert and conscious state of being. If this is so, then the sudden sleepiness and inactive, still state she lapses into makes sense, because any tasks she carries out are totally exhausting for her. I hope this is the case...I think it is. It gets lonely and difficult helping mom because we are the only ones who are doing anything for her---she gets no other therapies except respiratory therapy. And no one (doctors...) are around to give us a clue about how she is doing in reference to what we are doing with her. Feedback would be great occasionally...
Tomorrow is mom's 75th birthday....I miss her so much....please continue to keep us all in prayer. I'm having a hard night tonight.
