Mom Update, September 25, 2010, Saturday

Mom had a wonderful day today. She is still alert and awake for the most part, and happier as well. She smiled at us a lot today. I did some aromatherapy with her last night and had her smell the frankincense and rose of sharon oils I have (both of which are said to improve attitude). I also rubbed some on her as well.

Angelo, Madeline and JoAnn visited her this afternoon with dad and I. Anthony, Con and the kids were already there with mom. Terry came later in the afternoon. Mom smiled a lot at Angelo's jokes along with his now infamous rendition of "Come Meet the Mets!" She seemed to know who he was. At one point, Angelo asked mom, "Hey, Dotty, where's Frank Sinatra?" This is a nickname he gave Claudia's son Jean years ago. Mom did not speak a response but smiled and pointed with her index finger extended perfectly to Jean's picture on the wall!!!!!!!!!!! Many connections made in order to do that and a lot of memory involved as well!! She kissed Madeline and JoAnn and even grabbed JoAnn's hair and pulled it as a joke when we were kidding with her. Angelo also asked her, "Are you going to sleep?" at one point, and mom answered, "No, I'm staying up" very quietly. Dad said to mom, "I love you, do you love me?" and mom replied, "Yes."

Two physical therapists came to give mom physical therapy today too. They commented on how wonderful her range of motion is. I sat in on the session and observed and participated in the activities. They asked mom to take a cone from a stack in one person's hand and pass it to me by placing it on a stack in my hand and then do the opposite. She was able to do this with great concentration, determination and a lot of encouragement from me. She did it oh so slowly, but she did it. She was also able to lift her leg a bit independently and to push her upper body backwards toward the pillows --- all on command!!!

Later, after JoAnn, Angelo and Madeline left, mom spent a lot of time playing games on the IPAD with Terry. She even used her fingers to progress through the games!!! All on her own!! She enjoyed the CONCENTRATION/MEMORY card game and the object flashcards most of all.

We had yet another incident with the nurses there...it seems the aggravation just doesn't end. It was over a misunderstanding but it was aggravating just the same. Dad and I and Anthony managed to iron everything out in the end...but first we had to get forceful and assertive.

When we left mom, I put on Crossing Delancy, one of our favorite movies... Lenny will check in on her after the movies with friends tonight later. Madeline, JoAnn and Angelo couldn't get over her progress since they last saw her.

"I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Psalm 91:2
