Mom had yet another great day. Her eyes were open most of the day. I saw her early this morning and set her up for the day ahead---hearing aids, eyeglasses, washed face... Her eyes were open when I arrived. I did her physical therapy and she pretty much kept her eyes open the entire time I did so. She smiled and looked like she had a calm, comfortable, peaceful face as we exercised. The nurses came in and commented on how much mom is so alert and responsive now. One nurse said that mom said, "What" to her several times. The other nurse said that mom tracks with her eyes a lot now. She seemed to try to let me know that she needed her nose wiped by squeezing her eyes shut tight and touching her nose. When I arrived, she needed her nose wiped and it seemed that she knew she didn't have a tissue to do so because she kept pointing near her nose. One of the respiratory therapists told Claudia yesterday that we need to do facial movements and mouth movements---puckering, opening her mouth, sticking out her tongue... The nurse last night told me and dad that mom shocked her that morning because she looked right at her when she said good morning to mom. Dad and I did paperwork this morning...it is a daunting task to say the least. Anthony came to do mom's physical therapy around midday and said she was sleepy then. Dad and Aunt Carol came in the afternoon and found mom wide awake. They did her physical therapy and also showed her the family pictures and named everyone one at a time. Aunt Carol hadn't seen mom since last week and commented on how great she looked and acted. Claudia came late in the afternoon and did some cognitive therapy with mom using her IPOD Touch. She said that mom's favorite activity is the one where she looks at pictures of food. She also did the Sounds at Home and Outdoor Sounds CDs with mom. Mom wiped her eyes with her finger and her nose with a tissue. Mom grabs the IPOD Touch and wants to hold it herself now! While Claudia sat next to mom and held her hand, mom let her hand go and began to touch and explore Claudia's face. I visited mom this evening around 9 p.m. The night nurses lost one of mom's favorite piggys to hold---a long thin one--when they changed her. I tucked her in for the night and said our prayers, but I felt badly leaving her because her eyes were open. She had been sleeping peacefully when I arrived and awoke after the nurses changed her. It's hard to leave her when her eyes are open. Lenny and Ava start college tomorrow!! Anthony Michael started high school today!!
