I began mom’s day with her early this morning. She was asleep when I arrived but woke as I gently began her physical therapy. Lenny came and helped me with her PT. Then mom and Lenny did the tweezers and the pom poms in the small holes. Mom picked up 5 pom poms independently with the tweezers and put them in. Next, Lenny had mom open the clothespins and place them on the edge of a cup; then he had her remove them and put them away in the zip loc bag. Lenny also tries to teach mom how to zip the bag shut. Lenny found the MEGA BLOCKS (which are toddler sized LEGOS) and used those next with mom. (I think Lenny had more fun with them then mom!!!). Mom put 5 mega blocks together herself. Lenny had mom write on the dry erase board. He wrote with a blue marker and gave her a green one to write with. Usually mom makes random strokes or circles but today, she traced all the letters in the phrase, “Leave me alone!!!” all by herself!!!!!!!!
Something interesting happened today. After a conversation with one of the respiratory people about weaning mom, she put the vent on 6 (it was on 12) and when it went to 6, mom was breathing 14-19 breaths above the vent!!!!!!!!!! When it is on 12, she stays near 12 or 14 tops on her own without movement or laughing. Hmmmmm……how do we approach the “big headed” lead respiratory guy without implicating the wonderful, dedicated therapist who is helping us out????
I left and Lenny stayed with mom for a while. They played the SUPER WHY where she had to guess the sounds and spell words and write them. She did OK but really well with tracing over the letters and words. She and Lenny played Tic Tac Toe on the IPAD and Lenny actually lost once. Then they looked at the category cards of the VEGETABLES on the IPAD which shows big pictures and names the vegetable. Then she kept trying to clean the fingerprints on the IPAD (she's getting better!!). She and Lenny looked at pictures on the IPAD next of the family and he showed her a picture of him when he was 3 and mom gave him a big smile. When he had to go home, he told her, "I'm going now Nonny and I'll be back" and Mom said, "Yup, OK" and he told her he loved her and she told him the same thing.
Anthony, Anthony Michael, Sammy, Gina and Michael came to see mom next. They said that though mom was awake, she was mellow. They talked with mom, draw on the dry erase board, mom talked and said a few words and they hung out with her. They said that she was much more animated last night then today.
Phil saw mom today and she kissed him hello and smiled at him. He made her laugh a few times too.
Dad and Aunt Sophie and Terry found mom to be the same way today...mellow. Aunt Sophie goes home tomorrow.
