Claudia and I saw mom early this morning before work. Claudia did her physical therapy and mom slept the whole time we were there.
Dad saw mom this afternoon and said that she did a lot of talking but mouthing words and sentences or low talking. He didn't remember all she said but said that once when he was smiling at her she said, "What are you laughing about?" She was very smiley with him today. She stayed awake for an hour of their visit and then fell asleep again.
Claudia has been going to the head of physical therapy as we were told to do to report on the pillow placement...it is NEVER done correctly from day 1 forward. Every time we arrive, we have to move the pillows around and put them the correct way so that mom doesn't get edema in her extremeties.
Claudia came to see mom in the late afternoon and mom was awake. They did pictures, the IPAD, physical therapy...very productive. Mom said, "Yes" and "I'm not" (in reference to pulling on her trach line)... She mouthed Claudia's name on command with a model prompt. I came to meet them late in the evening and mom was still awake. A funny thing with mom is that, she sometimes seems like she isn't paying attention, but as soon as I lower my voice and whisper...she is staring and glaring right at me!!!!! As if to say, "What is Kathy talking about???" Too funny!!!
Mom is now able to assist in her physical therapy on a regular basis. She doesn't have the independent range of motion that she does when we assist her, but she is able to follow the commands to exercise her right side!!!
Mainly, when mom is awake, she is quiet and still and either becomes preoccupied, sleepy, or will sometimes talk (randomly and sporadically) or track conversations with her eyes. Though she is pretty responsive to Anthony and Con on a regular basis. They are the social visitors and Claudia and I are the teachers!!! hahaha!!! No fun!!
The kindness of friends and family continues to astound us and touch our hearts deeply...when I arrived at work today, I found that a colleague of mine spent hours hand-making a book of index cards to use with mom to improve her speech and language skills...it made me cry when I saw it. The prayers and support from you all is priceless and so necessary in order to withstand this ordeal...you just know you what it means to us...we love you all.
