Mom Update, November 13, 2010, Saturday

This morning, when I got to mom, she was sound asleep. I got everything ready to start the day and one of the respiratory people came in. I asked how mom’s CO2 levels were last night and she said they were good. Thank God. The respiratory person did her work with mom reading the charts and vent and then she suctioned mom while mom was asleep. What a rude awakening! The respiratory person said that mom wasn’t breathing over the vent last night at times---this means she had periods of sleep apnea (which she had before all this happened any way) and that is never a good thing. They are monitoring her for periods of sleep apnea at night in order to wean her from the vent. I guess they will start her on the lower vent setting during the day and resume the raised setting at night on Monday as planned. The pulmonologist had said yesterday that he felt a vent setting that was not at a fixed ratio (staying the same number all the time) was better for mom so that she wouldn’t rely on the vent to breath for her and she would begin to remember to breath on her own. This would also exercise her lungs which is good for her too. Hopefully, this will all start on Monday. I did her physical therapy and put her hearing aids in and gave her a manicure. Then mom and I read her, “All About Me” book. We decided to write some funny captions for the pictures—mom smiled a little when we did this. I guess my comedic attempts don’t hold a candle to Anthony! Hahaha! The CNA came to give mom a shower so I left until she was done.

Dad and Terry visited with mom today, so did Dad's cousin, Bobby, and Barbara and Danny. Dad said they had a nice visit. Barbara brought mom some really nice new magazines to look at and mom likes them. Dad said mom was in a good mood today and read and sewed on her sewing cards (and he couldn't remember what else!).

I saw mom later tonight to tuck her in and say prayers...she was sound asleep.
