Mom Update, November 19, 2010, Friday

For the first time in 5 1/2 months, mom stood up today!! The physical therapist used a harness type of apparatus under mom's butt to help support her in a standing position and a type of podium for her to lean on in a way in order for her to stand. She stood, bearing weight on her feet, for about 1-1/12 minutes. This totally wore her out. When she sat back down, she fell asleep. As she slept, the respiratory therapists put her vent on the SMIV mode--which is the middle level that they are using for mom at night...when mom woke up, they were supposed to put it back down to the CPAP level...but they didn't. It could also be that today is Friday and they like to proceed with caution on the weekends. Anthony and Con were there with mom when she stood. Mom was asleep when Anthony and Con arrived at first. When she woke up, she was in a good mood and smiling and glad to see them. They did her full physical therapy, read magazines, talked, watched TV, and did the sewing card with mom.

The physical therapist came while they were there and, in addition to standing, mom lifted her right leg 3 times and moved her left leg but did not move it enough to lift high enough to reach Dan's hand as usual.

Dad, JoAnn and I all came to be with mom in the afternoon. For the majority of the afternoon, we spent our time with mom in the recreation room where there was a birthday celebration. There was live entertainment-- a man playing a guitar and singing and a woman singing with him. The residents/patients all loved the music. Mom even smiled a lot and mouthed some of the words to the songs. Dad left before it became dark (still not driving at night since his cataract surgery). JoAnn and I stayed until dinner time and set mom up in bed, then we left to see John's show and to visit Aunt Peggy in the hospital. Aunt Peg is doing well and was moved to a rehab center while we were visiting with her. Aunt Sophie is in a rehab center too. They both need help with walking. John's show ended late and we went for coffee afterwards so, since it was around midnight when I drove home, I didn't go back to tuck mom in tonight. I pray the Lord continues to heal her.

"Lord, You establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished You have done for us." Isaiah 26:12
