Mom Update, November 22, 2010, Monday

Today, when Claudia arrived at mom’s, she was wide awake and alert and smiling. Claudia did her physical therapy and talked to her. She set mom up for the morning, giving her some magazines and her bed table and then left for work. When I arrived at mom’s her dear friends, Flo and Maureen, were visiting with her. Mom was looking at them and smiling. Dad and Anthony came moments later! Of course, as soon as Anthony started to talk to her, she smiled and laughed. I left to do some homework since mom had so many visitors. Angelo, Madeline and JoAnn came to see mom just after I left her. She recognized Angelo and Madeline and greeted them with a smile. Angelo and Anthony had mom laughing hysterically. JoAnn told mom that, even if Anthony sang the ABCs, she’d laugh. So Anthony sang them and mom laughed really hard. She gave Angelo 2 thumbs up at once and, at one point, she began to joke with Angelo and laughed some more. JoAnn had mom work on cutting paper with the scissors, putting buttons through the slot into the container, sew buttons together, and sew her heart and butterfly sewing cards. Flo told us that mom had a piece of her vent line in her mouth when she arrived so we alerted the staff --- we all need to be mindful that she has begun to chew on things at times. Claudia and I are investigating whether some sort of nook toothbrush is applicable for mom to use perhaps. When everyone but dad and Anthony left, the physical therapist came and had mom do leg lifts in her chair. She lifted her right leg about 6-7 times really high and lifted her left leg once really high. Then the therapist had mom stand again. She stood for a minute then sat down. Then he had her stand again for about 3 minutes and she did well. Anthony and dad said she looks really good and not too nervous to stand. Very natural. Dad came back after dinner to visit with mom. I am here now watching TV and getting mom ready for bed. When I walked in tonight, she was thumbing through a magazine and watching TV. She also played with her stuffed, pink bear that looks like a pig. We have decided to spend Thanksgiving Day here with mom all day. There’s a lounge that looks like a living room and we hope to hang out there and play games and watch the typical holiday videos…! Dad is feeling melancholy so please pray for him.
