Mom Update, November 24, 2010, Wednesday

Claudia began mom’s day with her. She did her full physical therapy/range of motion. She tried to get mom to lift her legs but no luck today. Claudia said that mom wasn’t in a good mood this morning. Cranky. When the head respiratory therapist came in to see mom, she ignored him and turned her head away from him. Claudia read her social story, “Getting Better” which outlines how mom needs to talk to people who talk to her. She set mom up for the day and left for work. Later in the day, one of the CNAs said that, when she walked into mom’s room this morning, after Claudia left, she found mom sitting in bed with her lap table doodling on the small doodle pad I bought for her. The CNA said that mom looked so alert and concentrated on what she was doing!! Dad came next. Mom tried to make a chain with the paper clips and was also putting them on the edge of the paper. She put the clothespins on the edge of a cup. She sewed with the sewing cards (she seems to love doing this). Mom used to do beautiful crewel and embroidery. Mom also drew on the wipe off board too. Dad said she made a picture of something that looked like a tree! When the physical therapist came, mom lifted her right leg a few times and didn’t lift the left one at all. But she stood for 4 minutes!! Dad said she does it so well---no look of distress, legs straight and bearing weight!! The respiratory therapist said that mom is doing so well on the vent that they are not going to raise the vent tonight!!! They are going to try to leave it on CPAP all night!! Say a prayer that she does well. When I arrived later this afternoon, mom was sitting beside dad and she was staring at him with such a look of love on her face as he watched TV and talked to her. It was a beautiful sight. I played with the IPAD with mom and she actually traced lower case manuscript letters using the stylus!!!! John and Claudia visited with mom tonight but she was tired. They worked on doing activities with mom’s left hand and she did well with some prompting. They tucked her in for bed when they left.
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23
