Claudia began mom's day with her this morning. Claudia and the physical therapist woke mom together. Mom was very happy when she first woke up, but got serious looking and maybe frustrated when the physical therapist began to give her commands. Mom wouldn't work for the therapist at first and then Claudia told her that he is her friend and that she should work for him... After that, mom moved her leg off the bed 10 times while on the exercise ball in front of the physical therapist!!!!
He said that there is definitely a stubborn personality at work underneath it all based on how we told him about mom doing things as soon as he leaves or before he arrives (we recognize that this could also be delayed processing due to the head injury as well). He asked her to reach and she did it once but no more and Claudia told him that mom knows when things are purposeful or not and gave mom the remote as an example of what she was saying and mom reached across her body for it! The therapist wanted her to move her ankles but she wouldn't do it for him though she was doing it spontaneously before he came.
She has no temp this morning - 98.7! PTL Let's hope it stays that way.
Dad called this morning to say that the neurologist's office called him to say that mom's EEG looks good!! Favorable brain activity and no signs of seizures!
Dad stayed with mom for most of the day today. He said that the head of respiratory came in today, Dad questioned him about mom’s vent and the respiratory person lowered it to 8 from 10!! He told mom, “We’re going to keep a close eye on you” and mom replied softly but audibly, “Why? What for?”!!!!!!! He almost fell over and asked dad, “What did she just say to me?” Dad repeated it!!! Dad said he and mom watched the Food Channel and also looked at magazines. He said he had her screw and unscrew the large nuts and bolts as well.
When I came in, mom was just put back into bed and I put her lap desk in front of her and had her snip some coupons with the scissors…she snipped well but didn’t know where to cut---couldn’t distinguish the lines at all at first but after several attempts and I marked the lines with a dark marker, she was able to cut on the lines again. Mom cut 2 coupons pretty precisely when all was said and done! Next, she and I did the wooden farm puzzle. Mom seemed to forget how to do it so I did hand over hand prompting for 2 of the 8 pieces, verbal and gestural cuing for 4 of the 8, and mom did 2 independently with no cues at all!!! Mom tried to put 2 pieces in using her left hand also. After this, I had her squeeze the clothespins open and put them on the side of the cup. She did well with this – 12 in all.
When I came back tonight to tuck mom in and say our prayers, she was wide awake, flipping through a magazine and watching TV. She looked very content and comfortable.
