Mom Update, February 17, 2011, Thursday

What a day today was.

Claudia began the day in the usual, uneventful fashion...mom was sleepy and Claudia did her physical therapy/range of motion exercises.

Around 12:30, I received a frantic call from Claudia who received a call from dad saying that mom wasn't doing well...had a fever...not responsive... I had to run a meeting but left promptly and met at the facility.

When I arrived, mom seemed alert and responsive. PTL Dad said she was doing better. When dad arrived around 11 to see mom today, he found her in her chair with no mitts on her hands---one hand was holding on tight to her G-tube and the trach line that is used for suctioning was wrapped around/through the double tied trach collar and mom was tilted to that side and out of it. Dad couldn't wake her for anything! He called for help and sometime after that, mom was awake again. Anthony arrived shortly after I did. Anthony said that yesterday mom was given a shower by her new CNA with her hearing aids in again!!! The day before that mom was put in her chair without shoes on her feet or circulation stockings on her legs.... Claudia and I went to the Building Administrator and met with him to voice our concerns. He answered and responded as we hoped he would but then why does this happen over and over???? He said that he explained to the staff that they never earned our trust or respect based on their actions and lack of care for mom. He said the staff didn't agree. He left us and went to call an emergency team meeting. He found everyone involved and met with them all for about an hour, then he came back to look for us. I stayed behind while Claudia went to work. By now, Lenny had also joined us with mom. He and Anthony had mom laughing as they joked with her. Dad and I met with the team for 2 hours....grueling. Supposedly, everything will be taken care of now (hmmmm.....where have we heard that before?). We also were able to get mom's old CNA back again (she now gives me hugs and kisses hello---she is like family). It appears though that the best nurse who we love was blamed for the situation today....it's always something with these people. I stuck up for the nurse but they insisted it was the nurse's mistake. This nurse is so dedicated and diligent that we found it hard to believe it was true. The nurse apologized to us and I even began to cry at one point. What a creepy, rotten system this is. The main point: Mom is OK. PTL. It's been a long day.....

"It is only the Lord's mercies that have kept us from complete destruction...." Lamentations 3:22
