Mom Update, February 22, 2011, Tuesday

I started mom's day this morning and she was out like a light. No matter what I did, even when I opened her eyelids, she didn't wake up. I did her full physical therapy/range of motion exercises. I sat with her even though she was sleeping until she was washed and dressed and in her wheelchair. Once she was in her chair, she appeared awake but, by that time, I had to leave.

Claudia came next to see mom and mom was asleep. She woke mom up. The speech therapist walked in with bananas and apple juice but mom had just woken up so mom wasn't opening her mouth too well at first. The therapist gave mom the banana on a spoon, but mom wouldn't open her mouth. When the therapist gave mom the juice in the cup, mom took the cup and helped to hold it to drink out of it. The therapist gave mom a piece of the banana without the spoon and gave mom more and more and mom ate it gradually. Claudia told the therapist about mom's constipation from the bananas and the therapist said that mom would be eating fruit cocktail soon because it has more variety and is soft. Claudia did the IPAD with mom next and they played a few word games and then mom watched some of the "Electric Company" then the CNAs came to put mom to bed and wash her up.

Dad, Aunt Sophie, and I saw mom next. I did mom's full physical therapy/range of motion and then I tried to put the 10 inch ball under mom's knees (one at a time) to see if she could lift her leg at all. She lifted her right leg 3 times!! Her right leg/foot left the bed by about an inch each time. She lifted the left leg once (same height). She was also able to move her feet when we asked her to move her legs and she wiggled her toes on command too but with a delayed reaction time. She looked like she was really concentrating through all this---her face got serious and turned red a few times. Dad and I kept telling her to chant, "Lift my leg up" over and over. We chanted it too and we also cheered her on as well. When this was over, I tried to do the IPAD with her but she wouldn't do it. She put 2 buttons in the container slot hand over hand and picked up 2 pom poms using hand over hand prompting as well. She fell asleep after that and could not be wakened. We 3 stayed until the early night and then tucked her in and prayed with her.

"...pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body." Proverbs 4:20-22
