Mom Update, February 3, 2011, Thursday

I give my sister credit for writing the blog every day. I am bleary eyed. I don't know how she does it every day! I hope I make sense.

I started the day with mom. I put her hearing aids in and put her glasses on. I washed her face and she opened her eyes and was wide awake right away. She was very "connected". She looked at my eyes and hung on every word I said. I spoke to her about my day and I told her I was going to St. Joe's today to do the student teacher seminar presentation. I then said and then guess where I am going? and she said, "Where?" I couldn't believe it. I did her PT and range of motion. She didn't wince when I stretched her right arm all the way up. I placed the ball under her leg and tried to get her to lift her leg. I showed the visual of her leg lifting as I gave the command. She wiggled her toes and moved her feet, but did not lift her leg. I thought it was an improvement for her to wiggle her leg. She was making a connection that I wanted her to do something with her leg. I showed her The Electric Company and she watched it intently. I packed up her Ipad and asked her if it was ok that I brought it to work to help one of the kids I work with. The district wants to buy him one. She nodded, "Yes." I told a joke to mom and her CNA and she laughed!

Anthony came in the morning and did full PT with mom (range of motion). He tried to get her to move her legs, but she wouldn't. He also tried to get her to cut. Mom was able to make 2 small cuts and then fell asleep. When she woke up she cut a little more. Anthony then worked with the sewing card. he held her hands and laughed a lot. She was in great spirits today! She fell asleep again and the speech therapist came in and said she had honey again and did well. The woman who arranges doctor appointments came in and said she is waiting to get back papers and date for the swallow test. She will be going to the hospital to have a modified barium swallow test. She said the test should be soon. She was shaking a lot today. Last time she was shaking (back when she was coming out of the coma), we were told that it was her brain making connections with her muscles - who knows? Anthony told her aid about the shaking and she said she would tell a nurse. Anthony did PT again at 1:30. When I arrived at mom's in the evening, Ava and Dad were there. Ava said she was in a great mood and hanging on every word she was saying. Ava told her all about her classes. Dad started to tell Ava the story about when mom and dad first met. Ava said that at one point mom put both her hands up as if to cut my dad short and say "Wait, I'll tell this part" then she spoke but Ava couldn't make it out. Ava asked mom to give her the pig she was holding and mom actually gave ehr the pig and let go. This is BIG! It is one of the first times I know of, that she released something. She can grab, but hasn't been able to let go (open her fingers), especially on command. Ava asked mom if Poppy was a hunk when he was young and mom nodded, "yes." I asked mom if Carmine came today and she said no. I looked on the window sill and his binder was there (he wanted to take it the next time he came). Dad and Ava left and I did her PT and then took out the ipad. We did many programs hand over hand (math, tangrams, piano, memory). I said a prayer with her and kissed her good night. It was a great day!

Peace and Love!
