Mom Update, March 1, 2011, Tuesday

Claudia began the day with mom this morning. She said mom was alert and present and awake and with it. She did mom’s physical therapy/range of motion exercises, followed by the IPAD. Claudia went to a number program and drew numbers and mom said the number. Mom closed the program herself and went to the main menu and picked “crosswords” but when Claudia asked, “Do you want to do crosswords?” Mom said no. Mom picked “Vegetables” and Claudia scrolled through them and mom said, “Cranberries” and “Cashews” and emphasized the “shew” part of “cashews.” As Claudia worked on stretching mom’s feet and ankles, mom had a movie on the IPAD and she asked Claudia, “Can you see it?” Claudia told her she couldn’t see it but that she was working on mom’s feet. The physical therapist came by and said he would be assessing mom again for physical therapy today and look at her wheelchair. Claudia worked on oral motor skills next and said that mom did a lip pucker with very little prompting/modeling. The lap desk was on the bed and mom knocked on it repeatedly and Claudia said, “What?” and mom drew with her hand (like miming) and said, “Pencil!”

Dad came next late in the afternoon. I had to take care of a tax problem I am having (say a prayer for me please). Dad said mom was awake and helped him do her physical therapy/range of motion exercises. Dad said that mom ate a full box of animal crackers and drank a whole cup of cranberries juice. John came next but mom was sleepy by then. Her feeding liquid was not finished yet and it should have been but the bell was ringing because there was an error in the feeding. He had the nurse fix it. He did her full physical therapy and found her left hand to be sort of clawed and stiff. After John stretched her out well, mom woke up and reached to her back to scratch and was able to reach far back! When she woke up, he tried to do some crossword puzzles but mom wasn’t interested, so he did some SUDOKO puzzles and as he did them, he read aloud…spoke aloud what he was doing and where he was putting the numbers and why. This was great for mom to listen to and she was very, very interested in listening to him. They laughed a little and watched some TV. When John left, he told mom he loved her and he waited until she finally said she loved him back and then she kissed him.

I came to see mom late this evening after work. She was doing her squinty eye thing but opened her eyes widely once I lifted her eyelids. She smiled at me. Her aide came in and said mom was awake again last night at 11!!! The aide also said that she and mom talked and mom told her she loved her… Mom’s aide and I talked last night and the aide told me that she is praying and fasting for my tax situation. Mom and I talked, snuggled, and prayed. Mom recited the Our Father with me when we came to that part of our prayers.

"And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others." 2 Corinthians 9:8
