One of the nurses came in to see mom this morning and asked, “Who are you?” and mom answered, “Dotty Gilman.” Claudia started the day with mom and did physical therapy/range of motion and leg lifts --- she lifted her right leg 3 xs and didn’t lift the left leg at all. Claudia moved a chair near mom’s bed and the chair squeaked and mom made a comment and laughed!! They did the theraband next and mom couldn’t do anything with either leg. When Claudia took mom’s feet out from under the covers to work on them, Claudia said, “Stinky feet!” and mom said, “Do they smell?” As Claudia worked on mom's right hand, mom told Claudia, "Do the other one!" Then Claudia gave mom a choice of activities by showing her 3 pictures/photos: pegs or clothespins or nuts and bolts and mom said, “Nuts and Bolts!” Then Claudia presented her with a nut and bolt and she moved her left arm to reach for it! Claudia had to place it in her hand though. Mom held the bolt in her left hand and Claudia prompted her to take the nut off—hand over hand. Mom fell asleep a bit and Claudia wrote down notes and turned around and mom was awake in a few minutes so Claudia said, "Wow! That was a short nap!" Mom said, "It felt long!" Mom tried to grab Claudia’s earrings again like she did 2 nights ago and Claudia said in a firm voice, “No grabbing! You hurt my ear.” Mom said, “Oh, I didn’t realize that.” Claudia asked mom to blow her a kiss across the room and mom did. Th;e Building Administrator saw Claudia leaving and asked if he could be introduced to mom. Claudia said sure and brought him to mom. He said good morning and mom said good morning back and then he asked how she is feeling and mom said, "Very good." The Administrator said he was going to speak to the head of therapy to get mom "Cognitive Therapy" by an Occupational Therapist. Claudia said she was VERY ALERT!!!!!! Mom was amazing!
Anthony came just as mom got out of the shower and she was awake but very sleepy. He worked with the clothespins. She fell asleep until the nurse came in to clean her teeth and Anthony told mom to say hi to the nurse and mom said, “Hi” and used the person’s name!! The nurse was thrilled!!! Anthony did mom’s full physical therapy and then asked her to clap her hands and she did it!!!
Dad came next and did mom’s full physical therapy again and then he went with her to the recreation room to play Wii Bowl (video bowling). He said she did the bowling. She was sleepy after bowling.
Mom’s vent PSV is down from 14 to 12!! This is an improvement. It means mom has to initiate breaths.
When I came to see mom, she was awake but tired. Her eyes were open but she didn’t really talk or anything. She just looked relaxed and looked around the room or at me. At one point, I showed mom some pictures Anthony brought for her. One is of Anthony Michael, Mom and Samantha at a lake. I asked her who was in the picture and she called Sammy, Ava. I showed her the other picture next—of mom and Aunt Carol. She smiled and smiled at this one. She tried to pull her trach line 3 times in the ½ hour I was sitting beside her.
Con and Samantha came to see mom tonight. Sam said that Mom was up and very alert and watching TV and mouthing a lot of words and laughing at the TV and the commercials. Sammy said that Con asked her who was in the picture of mom and Aunt Carol and mom said, "Aunt Carol." Sammy said they did mom's physical therapy/range of motion exercises and hung out with her. Dad put mom to sleep tonight.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
