I began the day with mom this morning. I arrived well before 8:00 a.m. and mom was in bed, hugging her stuffed piggies asleep. I straightened her room quickly and then woke her. She smiled at me broadly. Just as I finished putting her hearing aids in, her breakfast arrived (hard boiled egg, oatmeal, coffee, 2 containers of orange juice, and vanilla milk---a bagel came too but I didn’t think she would be able to eat it so I requested a croissant for her instead). Though mom ate all of her breakfast, she only fed herself about 1/4 of the food alone, the rest I had to feed to her. It was almost as if she knew Claudia should be there as usual and this confused her. Her CNA commented about how mom is used to who comes for which meals--Claudia in morning, Anthony for lunch and me for dinner, and how mom only eats for that person and no one else! As she ate, the CNA and I talked; mom listened intently. At one point, when I mentioned it was almost Easter, mom mouthed, "Really?!!!!" in a surprised manner. I told the CNA about all the food mom would make for our traditional Easter breakfast. The aide was amazed. I asked mom if she remembered making the food and asked her what goes into the french toast casserole and mom mouthed, "I don't know. I forget." She was relatively quiet but interested in the conversation. I told mom it was cousin JoAnn's birthday yesterday and cousin Theresa's today and mom said, "Wow." The CNA commented on how much she loved all mom's grandchildren and how wonderful they all are. She also commented on our whole family as well and how much love she sees in our actions. Mom finished eating just as I left for work.
Anthony came next to see mom and he said that mom was very sleepy and lethargic and wouldn't pay attention to anything and hardly ate any lunch at all. He said she was nothing like she was yesterday. At 12:30 the CNAs changed mom and put her back in the chair and he said she seemed a little more awake.
Dad and Claudia came to see mom next. Dad said that mom's good friend, Rita, from church came to see mom. Dad said that as soon as mom saw Rita, mom said, "OH MY GOD!!!" and put a huge smile on her face. Mom's friend, Maureen, came to see mom next. I know there seemed to be much to tell about these 2 visits, but Claudia's voice messages were garbled and I couldn't hear much more than this. I will fill you in on their visits tomorrow I guess. Mom fell asleep and woke up as dad was leaving and she kissed dad good-bye. Claudia showed her the magazine with Jean in it and mom thumbed through it. Mom kept grabbing for the remote for the TV so Claudia gave it to her and she was enthralled with pushing the buttons and changed the channel or shut it off and turned it on. Mom read the magazine and played with her stuffed pigs too. Claudia was going to try to do some other activities with mom because she seemed more alert and awake. Claudia left to go to see Jean's show, "The Producers" at Five Towns College tonight.
