I began the day with mom this morning---bright and early. I was shooting to get there no later than 7:30 a.m. because I made a “stuffed French toast casserole” (and homemade sauce for it) for the staff on mom’s unit. Mom was just waking up when I got there. She gave me a big smile when I said hello and when I asked how she is, she said, “I’m fine.” She was perky and alert. She began to eat her scrambled eggs and white bread independently. I told her that we still had to write what she wants to say in dad’s birthday card, she asked, “Is his birthday today?” I told her it’s Wednesday. I began to play music…church music and mom loved it.
Claudia joined us and brought mom a wheat germ omelet and fresh fruit (melons and watermelon). Mom was happy to see her and to eat the omelet. I asked mom what Claudia brought and she mouthed, “Wheat germ omelet.” We talked and she ate. She had started eating independently, but then sort of faded and became sleepy (though still alert and present). I fed her the rest of her food or assisted her with eating by putting the food on the fork for her. Claudia and I sang with her as she ate, and now and then, she mouthed the words with us. Claudia and I were on either side of mom singing. We began to listen to John Denver, and Glen Campbell. Mom knew the name of the songs and that John Denver was singing.
Anthony, Con and the kids came next. The kids read mom their report cards and mom said, “Get out!!!” like, “get out of town!!” She was the center of our family circle; we were all gathered around her. Claudia brought the Newsday paper for mom. We all sat around and read various sections of the paper…including mom. We set a section of the paper up on the easel for her to see and read. Con sat beside mom and helped her turn the pages and read on and off. When the nurse came in and asked mom if it was Ok to suction her, mom made a face and said, “I guess.” Sammy sat beside mom and held her hand while she was suctioned. When she was finished, Sammy asked her to give her a high 5 and mom did. Sammy brought her Confirmation dress to show mom too. Sam put the dress on and showed mom. Mom mouthed, “Very pretty.” Anthony worked on mom’s legs. Mom threw kisses to Anthony. Claudia and I left and dad and Terry joined Ant, Con and the kids. They said she was awake and present and alert but not too talkative. Dad said mom ate her whole lunch and needed only minimal assistance.
We all went to see Jean’s last “school” play---he was in “The Producers” at Five Towns College. He was awesome as always. We are all so proud of him. Afterwards, we all went out to eat. Then I dropped Dad and Claudia back off by mom and Lenny and I went home. Dad and Claudia found mom asleep and prayed over her and sat with her a bit and then left.
