Claudia and Terry are on their way home tonight from Saratoga Springs. They went away for a few days of rest and relaxation. I was home cooking for Easter Sunday---stuffed mushrooms and Easter pie (ricotta, mozzarella, suprasade, pepperoni, ham, provolone, hard boiled eggs…) and dad’s birthday cake… Dad went to pick up Aunt Sophie.
Soooo…..Con began the day with mom this morning. She was there bright and early and spent the day with mom. Mom had another relatively sleepy day today, alert when awake but very sleepy. Con was there before mom had breakfast and mom said, “Hi” to Con when she got there. Mom ate oatmeal, waffles, and OJ and coffee for breakfast. Con did mom’s full physical therapy/range of motion exercises and then mom fell asleep. Con read a magazine to mom and they looked at the pictures together. Mom went back on the CPAP mode of the vent for a while in the afternoon after she woke up finally. She ate turkey with gravy, cream of spinach and corn and bread for lunch. Anthony, Sammy, and Anthony Michael all joined Con and mom for lunch and they brought sandwiches and told mom they would eat with her just like a picnic! Mom liked that. They talked with mom and did her physical therapy again and also had mom do the hand bicycle from Barry for a while. We are trying to get mom to be more active because it opens pathways in the brain and also helps her to breathe better.
Oh yes, remember when Anthony and I inquired about the resident dentist coming to see mom to clean her teeth? This was about 2 months ago!!!! Our health care system is terrible! The dentist said it would take about 2-3 weeks longer before seeing mom and cleaning her teeth.
Dad arrived with Aunt Sophie as Con, Ant and the kids were leaving or shortly before that. Dad said that he and Anthony heard mom’s voice today because the trach cuff was loose again and it sounded just like her normal voice!! This was the first time Dad has heard her voice since last May… Dad seems to be having a difficult week…his birthday and Easter week are hard for him. He and mom are very active in the church and I am sure he misses her as he participates in this week’s church activities. Dad did mom’s upper body physical therapy/range of motion exercises and they talked and watched TV. Mom kept having periods of high respiratory rates and shaking again today. Dad asked her what was wrong and mom said it was her stomach that hurt. Dad felt her stomach during the high respiratory rate periods and found that it was very hard and called the nurse who determined mom had a problem with gas…so the nurse gave mom something for the problem. Mom’s 3-11 aide said that she found out that mom sleeps better when the head of the bed is lowered a little as opposed to being elevated to a sitting position. Dad and Aunt Sophie visited with mom for a while and then dad brought Aunt Sophie to his house. Anthony stopped by there to make some dinner for Aunt Sophie and dad returned to see mom again. When I arrived, mom was eating dinner. Dad was feeding her some pudding. She had just finished eating some string beans, carrots and quiche. She ate all the food at breakfast and dinner. She wasn’t crazy about her lunch. Mom and I talked and discussed the events of my day. I asked her if she wanted to talk to Claudia and Terry on the phone and she mouthed, “Yes” so we called them and she listened intently to the details of their trip. After the phone call, mom fell asleep (the aides had come in to put her back to bed by then). When she woke, dad and I worked on physical therapy on her legs. We tried to get mom to move her legs and toes and she mouthed, “I don’t want to move them.” Dad said that he and mom spent time praying together today. Mom fell asleep again. Dad and I stayed a while longer and then we tucked mom in and prayed over her and went home.
