Mom Update, April 25, 2011, Monday

Lenny began the day with mom at around 8:00 a.m. He said that mom was very, very sleepy this morning. She would be up for a few minutes and then sleep again right away. He did her full physical therapy/range of motion exercises anyway. She was very sleepy…no resistance. No waking her even if you shook her. She ate like there was no tomorrow before that though!!! Ate all her French Toast, oatmeal and juice and coffee for breakfast. Lenny finally got her to wake up around 10 a.m. Mom said, “Good morning” and a lot of other things but he couldn’t make out what she was saying (he isn’t good at lipreading). Carmine came and did his exercises with her, but mom slept a lot for him too. He wants us to work on her tongue exercises more. He told Lenny that she is improving a lot and doing well in general. Lenny wants to implement a plan for keeping mom awake but he is going to ask his physiological psychology teacher first. His plan is to keep mom awake on purpose during the day and make her sleep only at night. He is concerned though about doing this because he wants to check to see if sleep is promoting healing for mom. He is studying physiological psychology and comes home with many ideas about how to help mom. Ava comes home with ideas about how to improve mom’s speech.

Dad and Aunt Sophie came to see mom shortly after Lenny left. Mom had her lunch then and ate everything. She had chicken salad, a croissant, lettuce, tomato, and carrot cake and vanilla milk. After lunch, she fell asleep again. I came to see mom next and she was asleep. I woke her and we talked. Shortly after that, Terry came to see mom. She showed mom books and games on her NOOK. Mom really stares at the pages as Terry reads to her. She is very interested in what Terry does with her. While Terry read to mom, I worked on her feet and ankles and legs. While mom is in the wheelchair, she wears mid-calf-high E-Z boots. They are fleece lined on the inside and Velcro closed down the shin bone. They have a strong plastic back at the ankle that extends down the bottom of the foot. This helps to keep mom’s feet from dropping forward (which, if this happens, will prevent her from ever walking again). Dad came after dinner to be with mom again and Terry left. Terry said mom fell asleep after I left, but woke to eat all her dinner. When dad came, mom was initially awake but then fell asleep. He tucked her in for the night and prayed and left.

"He is not here; he has risen, just as he said." Matthew 28:6
