Mom Update, April 7, 2011, Thursday

Hi everyone,

I started the day with mom. She was in a good mood. She was wide awake. I started her PT and then Breakfast came. We figured out that mom won't eat if we stare at her so we have to have a conversation and then she will eat. She had a hard boiled egg and a croissant. She needed to be "kick started" and we had to feed her first. Once she starts getting food she will then feed herself. She needed help with stabbing the food but then brought the fork to her mouth. She was a little confused with drinking which was weird. She didn't close her mouth on the cup to drink. after awhile she did better. I think mornings are hard and she isn't processing well first thing in the morning. I had to leave to get to work and I told her I would see her later.

Carmine came today. He used a vibrator machine on her to strengthen her mouth muscles. He also asked her questions and she answered him. He made a joke about his bad breath and she laughed. She looked sad and appeared to cry at one point. Carmine said it is a good thing because she is aware. He was sick for awhile but is feeling better and will start to come weekly again.

Anthony came next. Mom was still in bed. He had to wait outside and the nurses were working on her room mate. Anthony came in and mom was in her chair. Lunch came and she ate the whole lunch. She did't feed herself much. Anthony fed her and it was half and half with her feeding herself and Anthony feeding her. It takes almost an hour for her to feed herself lunch. She was shaking a few times (episode). She fell asleep. When she woke up Anthony put the pre-game show for the Mets. Her right hearing aid isn't working so dad took it to be fixed.

Dad drove Aunt Sophie home to New Jersey and then went to see mom. He said that when he came in the room she reached her hand out to take dad's hand. She was wide awake. John and I arrived next. She was wide awake. John and I had her cut out coupons. We put the paper in her left hand and the scissor in her right and she cut out a coupon. We then gave her one of these cutting pages I bought. You cut the various items out. She cut half way and stopped. John then put the Mets channel on and they had an old game on. He put the Mets hat on and we all laughed. John and I sang "Beat the Mets" song! She didn't laugh! Oh well! John made a few jokes and mom laughed. He kept telling her funny names of people he went to school with when he lived in Brooklyn. Mom tried to read his shirt (Disney - I'm Grumpy cause you're Dopey!). I switched sides and sat on her right. She seemed better when I sat on her right. I gave her some of her squishy toys and she played around with them. I stretched her hands and her feet. i put lotion on her feet and clipped her toe nails. We also did the buttons in the container. i placed the buttons on her lap and she picked them up and placed them in the container through the slit in the top of the container. Mom started to fall asleep. She was very sleepy so we put her mitts on and lowered the bed. We put the timer on the TV and said a prayer and left.

Peace and Love!

Claudia
