Mom Update, March 31, 2011, Thursday

I started the day with mom. She was awake and alert. She tried to talk but I couldn’t understand her. I took off her mitts and turned to place them on the window sill and mom tapped me on the shoulder. I turned and she handed me the “Posey” (the pillow she holds in her mitt! I said, “Hey thanks!” The head of respiratory came in but mom wouldn’t talk to him today. I did the calendar with her and she repeated the date after I said it.

When Anth go there the OT was getting there and the lunch came. Mom was sleeping so they woke her up. She was drowsy so she didn’t want to eat. She got two or three forks full of food and then she started to play with the food. She started to eat with her hands and then use the fork to move the food around the plate. Her aide then came in to feed her and Anthony also fed her. Anth asked her if she wanted to eat and mom said no. Anth left when dad arrived. Mom’s friends Maureen and Flo came to see mom. Mom was sleepy and dosed on and off. Dad stayed with her through dinner.

I came back in the evening and I read an article about Pelfry (Mets pitcher – it was killing me! I am a Yankee Fan!) She was glued to the article. I then folded out the main section and read about every player. She held the paper in her right hand and then moved her left arm and opened her fingers as best she could to hold the paper with her left hand! She moved her left arm and opened her left hand the most I have seen in a long time. She was very interested.

I then took out the guitar we have in the closet and played and sang. I sang Edelweiss and mom said a few words. I also sang Billy Joel songs and mom listened. I then took out the ipad and she grabbed it with both hands. I played songs and sang some more. I played “Raindrops are Falling on my Head” and typed the lyrics in note pad. She was very serious and attentive. I kept stopping the song and saying, “What’s next?” She didn’t answer but I wanted to include her in the conversation.

After that I asked her if she wanted to say a prayer and she said yes. I made the sign of the cross on her forehead and said a prayer. When I was done I said, “Hey mom since tomorrow is opening day I will make the sign of the cross like Jeanie was taught! Home, second, third, first!” True story! When Jean was little he couldn’t remember how to do the sign of the cross and one of his baseball coaches was at religion class and told him, “Jean, think baseball, home, second, third, first!” He never forgot!

We all got our love of baseball from my mom! She was a big Brooklyn Dodger fan and is now a BIG Mets fan!

For mom – LET’S GO METS! (Let’s go mom!)

Play Ball!
