Mom Update, July 5, 2011, Tuesday

Mom’s update July 5th 2011

Today was the first day of summer school! I can’t wake mom until summer school is over because it starts so early. Oh yea, and did I forget to mention that Jean, Ava, Lenny and my nephew Michael all work with me this summer!

Kathy is at another conference in Orlando--Autism Society of America--presenting her research work this week.

Dad woke mom this morning and said she was awake and very talkative. Carmine came today and worked on oral motor activities to strengthen her muscles in her face to help with swallowing and eating. He will soon meet with our family to teach us what to do during this new phase!

Anthony, Con, Sam and Anthony Michael came next and unfortunately mom was out like a light. Mom’s friend Flo also came but mom was out of it. The daughter of mom’s previous roommate came to see how mom was doing.

Dad came back with Aunt Sophie and mom was awake. I showed up to put mom to bed and mom was awake but very tired (no energy) and she had a difficult time speaking clearly because she was so tired. I took out some cards to play an Uno type game with mom. They had 9 shapes and 9 colors. I gave mom and myself 5 cards and the rest in a draw pile. I asked her if she had either a blue card or a circle card. Mom said no. I looked and she didn’t. I then had her pick up a card and explained that she needed to take a card and turn it over. I explained to her that we need her to use her wrist to turn over the card. She did with help. We played for a while and then I took two cards and asked her, “What is the same about these cards?” I prompted her with… they are the same because they are both…and mom said round. (I was looking for circle – but hey). I did this with different as well. I prompted her with…what is different about these cards? They are different because one is… and one is… She was able to answer some with help and some independently. She started to get very tired so we stopped. I sat and talked and told her about my day. Just before I left I went into her draw where the hearing aid cleaning tools are to clean her hearing aids and I say the “Blowing” toys we had for her. I took out a bird whistle and she blew and made a slight sound. I also took out the alligator with two Styrofoam balls for eyes. When you blow in it the eyes float. She blew and the eyes floated. I then set the TV timer and dimmed the lights. We said a prayer and she gave me a kiss.

Peace and Love,

~ Claud
