Mom Update, August 15, 2011, Monday

Mom’s update Monday, August 15th, 2011

Anthony and Sam were with mom to wake her this morning. They were there in time for breakfast and helped to set mom up to eat. Anthony worked on mom’s legs. He had her cross her legs one over the other, which mom was able to do. He also had her lift her knees up to her chest and she was able to do that as well. Anthony and Sam stayed with mom through lunch and then dad came. Mom went to therapy after lunch and came back to the room later in the day and dad was still there. Speech is being discontinued because the speech therapist said mom has made so much progress there is nothing anyone can do for mom. John and Con’s cousin will continue speech with mom and also show us what to do for her.

I came before dinner and dad left. He said mom did well in PT and took a few steps but they are concerned with the fact that mom walks hunched over. They want her to walk with her back straight. They said it might have to do with her wheel chair and how it is set. They may fix her wheel chair so it is straighter when she sits. They will also remove the piece that goes under her legs and have her feet hang more. All of these adjustments will help with her balance.

Dad left and I stayed with mom. Dinner came and mom ate it all. She had chicken fingers, green beans, and French fries. Of course she ate the French fries first! I brought her a cookie for dessert. When dinner was done I kept her coffee off the tray and we ate dessert together. My cousin JoAnn sent mom a birthday card with a menu in it form the Paula Dean restaurant in Georgia. Mom looked at that menu for almost an hour, reading each food item and commenting on it. We called JoAnn and mom talked to her about the menu. Mom loves to cook, collect recipes and of course eat. Kathy and Lenny called from upstate and mom was glad to hear form them.

I took out the button, snap and zipper boards to do with mom. She had a great deal of difficulty catching the zipper, but once it was put together she was able to lift the zipper. She did a great job snapping and unsnapping the snaps. She had a lot of difficulty with the button board. I modeled it for her but she couldn’t get the left hand to work. I then put on the Mets channel and gave her the baseball cards to look at. She was then placed in her bed and set up for the night. She kept asking for her blue makeup bag, which is at home. I told her I would bring it soon. Dad brought her pocketbook to look through. I sat with mom and watched my favorite show, Pawn Stars. It is on the History channel and mom loved it. A man was selling a Charlie Chaplin wind up tin toy and mom said she had a Charlie Chaplin doll as a kid.

It was getting late and mom could see I was tired. She told me to go home and go to sleep. Wow, it is so much easier leaving her at night when she isn’t suffering form “sun downers”. I put her mitts on and she said they were too tight. She said, “If you make them too tight I can’t take them off when you leave!” She then laughed! She IS a CHARACTER!

Peace and Love,

Claud
