Mom’s update Thursday, August 18th, 2011
When I walked into mom’s room this morning she was sitting up in bed with the mitts off and the bed remote in her hand. Go figure. I can’t wait for the feeding tube to come out so we can ditch the mitts. We may have to rethink the whole mitt thing. I made her an egg beater omelet this morning. She ate it all. I asked the staff to get her ready early because there was a Catholic service today in the dining room and I know she would love to go.
The service was great and mom received Communion for the first time in a long time. Mom said the prayers and sang the songs. Anthony came in the middle of the service and we both went back to her room after the service was over. Anthony had mom do leg exercises in her wheel chair. He moved the leg pieces and had her try to sit forward. The more she sits forward the more she won’t get dizzy. He also had her shift her weight from side to side. He showed her by modeling in a chair facing her where to put her hands and how to push. She was moving her legs a lot with Anthony. Mom had a chest x-ray today when Anthony was there. I was told that the x-ray was done already and it was clear but obviously not. Anthony put her gloves on and left. The OT and PT were in the hall coming to take mom to therapy.
Mom has a new wheel chair as of today. This wheel chair will have her seated straight up instead of lying back like the old chair. Her feet will also hang straight down instead of on a slant. This will all help with her walking posture. The PT spoke to dad and told her mom did well today. She shuffled her feet when she walked in PT and didn’t stand up straight. She would stand up straight but not walk. The two have to integrate – posture and walking. Mom had speech today?!?! Go figure! We were told that speech was being discontinued. (I am a little suspicious since the speech person told us in the beginning of the week that there was no more that could be done with mom)
Dad came back from upstate. Mom had been telling me that she missed dad. She was happy to see him. She asked how upstate was. She asked for Kathy. Mom didn’t eat her dinner. She grabbed the dessert and ate it all but didn’t eat dinner. Mom and dad spent the evening watching TV and holding hands. Dad prepared her for bed and kissed her and said her prayers and left.
Peace and Love,
~Claud
