Mom Update, August 29, 2011, Monday

MOM TOOK 22 STEPS TODAY AT PHYSICAL THERAPY USING THE WALKER!!!!!!!!!
A year ago today, mom was in a coma.....just think of what a miracle her progress is.

Terry began the day with mom. Mom was out like a light and Terry woke her for breakfast. Mom ate cottage cheese, and fruit and juice and coffee. She ate half her breakfast. She napped after breakfast then got ready to get dressed for the day. Mom brushed her own teeth and used the toilet using the new lift (????? go figure...no one reads the care plan????). Evidently, the day nurse said that mom has no problem with the new lift (when I saw mom this afternoon, mom said that the lift hurts under her arms and her back badly and that she won't use it any time soon). Terry and mom watched old TV shows on DVD together until lunch (egg salad, macaroni and cheese, fruit...).

Dad spent the afternoon with mom. They talked and watched TV and read the newspaper together. Mom left for therapies for about 2 hours or so in the afternoon. Then, I came to join mom. I told her I was so proud of her and she asked why. When I told her I was proud she walked 22 steps, she said, "Yeah, but so what. I didn't walk alone. I had the walker." I reminded her of where she was last year at this time and she said, "Oh I would have to say that I don't believe you." She is too funny.

Claudia came to put mom to bed tonight.

Hi Everyone,

I came in the evening to put mom to bed. Dad was there and they were reading the paper. Mom kept asking me questions about hurricane Irene. Dad left and I sat with mom as she read the paper until dinner came. Mom had quiche, mixed veggies, and a croissant. She ate everything but the veggies - she had a few spoonfuls and then said they weren't good. After dinner I took mom outside so I could get reception on my phone so I could use it as a wireless connection for my computer. I turned on my mac and connected to Facebook and was able to video chat with Ava! Mom was so surprised! She was able to see Ava and Ava could see her. Mom was able to see Ava's dorm room. They spoke for quite a while. I then took mom to the computer room and we watched my kids on Youtube. She was able to see a few musical numbers from previous shows. I also went through her email and we deleted some junk mail. We didn't get back to the room until after 8pm. Mom is using a lift to help her stand and then it is wheeled to the bathroom so she can use a toilet. Then she was put in bed. We made a few phone calls. Mom was able to talk to my sister-in-law, Pat. Pat was so happy to hear mom's voice and she couldn't get over the fact that she could have a conversation! Next, I called my house because my friend Thom was over. The last time Thom saw mom she was practically in a coma again and very unresponsive. Thom was able to have a conversation with her. He was shocked! Mom and I watched one of our favorite shows, "American Pickers." We talked about the show and what they found. It was getting late and we said a prayer. Mom said, "Thank you for praying with me." I then started to sing a song that she and I would sing when I was little. I then segued into another song and then yet another song. After the third song mom cried. I told her I didn't sing to make her cry. Mom asked me if I thought she would ever get better. i told her every day she makes gains and get closer to getting home. She was still a little down. Mom asked for her newspaper and I explained that I would throw them out and get her new papers tomorrow. My dad has a tendency of making "piles" of junk and there were already a stack of newspapers in the room. I joked with mom and said if we let dad take over the room with piles of newspapers her room will look like the "Collier" brothers. I said next thing you know there will be a giant ball of string in the corner. She laughed hysterically. Mom asked me where John was and I said home why? she said, "Oh, I thought he was going to sleep her with me tonight!" and then laughed hysterically. (She cracks herself up) I gave mom a kiss and said good-night.
