Mom Update, August 8, 2011, Monday

Mom was sleeping when I arrived this morning and there were 2 new CNAs on the wing. The wing mom is now in for the past few weeks is awful to say the least. Not the same care and attention she received downstairs where she was. Mom said she didn’t sleep because her roommate was up yelling all night again. Mom kept refusing to get up and eat…she just wanted to sleep. The new CNAs were all set to feed mom. They didn’t know anything about her---usually there is a briefing about the patients that happens at the shift change. Either mom or her roommate needed to be changed. The shift changed at 7 a.m. it was now 8-8:30 and neither of them had been changed yet and the CNAs explained that now that food was served on the floor and in the room, neither patient could now be changed. The new CNA said that her parents were in a nursing home too and that mom has probably been They also sent French toast for breakfast---ignoring what we ordered for mom. Then, when I asked for different food, no one knew what I was talking about—even though this has happened in the past and a new meal was brought to mom with no problems. They brought a new breakfast and then they didn’t bring anything to drink. I went to the nurse for something to drink and the nurse began to slam things on the cart…obviously mad and inconvenienced or mad at whoever didn’t bring a drink to mom. The serving tray that the dish was on was hot and mom burnt her hand on it---not badly thank God. I can’t wait to get mom out of this place and home. One of the CNAs last week told mom not to use the bed pan anymore and just use the diaper! OK I vented and complained enough.
Mom had scrambled eggs and cottage cheese and juice, milk, water, coffee for breakfast. Again, she commented on how delicious it all tasted. Mom commented again that she can’t move the fingers on her left hand. Mom is now able to tell me what she needs like how high to set the table for eating at an optimal height. She also tells me her preferences for drinks now too. Dad called mom and they chatted. They enjoy their morning telephone chat now. Dad said that mom’s roommate was noisy and rambunctious when he left last night.
Mom remembered that both Sister Suzanne and Florence came to see her yesterday and that they talked but she couldn’t remember anything else they did. Suzanne and mom read the METS baseball cards and watched the game. They also did the “Activity Cards” --- the ones that have pictures on the front and questions about the pictures on the back. Mom did great with them. I reminded her. I also reminded mom that her birthday is this Saturday. She couldn’t remember how old she will be but she remembered that she was born in 1935. I told her that she will be 76 and that she can remember this by the song, “76 trombones!” We laughed. Mom drank her thickened water and made a face each time saying, “I know this is just all in my mind with this water but…” and she would drink again and make a face and we would laugh. Barry asked what the thickener in the liquids is and I checked today…it is “Modified food starch (corn).” Mom fought me about drinking all of the thickened liquids today. The fact that they were thickened really bothered her for the first time today!! Mom asked me, “Don’t you ever want to go to sleep?”
A happier, nicer CNA came to check on mom. I didn’t know this CNA, but the CNA knew me and asked, “Where were you all day yesterday??” They look for me now! Hahaha!
Mom asked to go to the bathroom again…and again I explained that she can’t and has to use the bed pan. She said, “You mean there are no facilities her for someone to use a toilet like a normal person?” and she laughed. Then she teased me and said, “You are so stupid!” and I asked why and she said, “Because you keep telling me the same stuff over and over again!” and laughed.
Anthony came next to see mom and said that the PT said that she did great today and that it was her best day yet!! She stood and largely supported herself and pushed the walker too! Mom did great in OT and also in Speech and drank a full glass of regular water today with no problems. Anthony told mom that cousin Barry taught us all exercises to do with mom to help her walk and mom said, “Great!” Mom said she didn’t do well in PT though---that’s her perception. She told Anthony that she is afraid because of her balance being off!!
Dad came to see mom next. He said they ‘snuggled’ last night and watched TV (Suzanne said she found them both sleeping when she arrived yesterday!!!).
Claudia came to be with mom tonight. They talked and laughed and snuggled. Mom talked on the phone with Ava. Then, Mom talked on the phone to Claudia’s childhood friend, Debbie, tonight (she is moving). Mom asked Debbie, “Are you all moved in?” Then mom said, “I just called to tell you God bless you and have a safe trip.”

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." Ephesians 1:3
