Mom Update, September 6, 2011, Tuesday

Mom is still in the hospital. Part or all of the mystery of what's wrong is solved---she had a kidney stone! This was causing all the vomiting, fever, chills, pain in the back and side yesterday....couple that with an enema and it seems to explain all the symptoms.

Mom spent the night and all day today in the Emergency Room since no beds became available until 4 p.m. this afternoon. The doctor came in to say that her kidney and liver functions were fine. Her white blood count was at 19 (high, indicating an infection of some sort). The CAT Scan showed no blockages in the bowels or intestines. The initial abdominal x-ray showed a stone in the kidney yesterday early on. The CAT Scan showed the stone had moved to her bladder by late last night. She also has another UTI (urinary tract infection). She is being treated with antibiotics. The UTI is making her slightly confused but not too badly. The pulmonologist saw her and said it is highly unlikely that she aspirated (breathed food into her lungs) or that she has any pneumonia. The pulmonologist thinks her weight is causing her stomach to press on the left lung which makes it look like pneumonia. In any event, the UTI antibiotic will take care of any chance of pneumonia. We are still waiting for the results of the blood culture to rule out sepsis (blood infection).

Mom was in great spirits today. Dad rose early, had breakfast, went to mass and then straight to mom. He spent the entire day with her. Lenny and I arrived in the afternoon followed by Claudia in the late afternoon and evening. Mom talked, laughed, joked, ate, drank...she was fine but washed out and slightly confused at times.

Hopefully, she will be back at the facility tomorrow.
