Mom Update, September 7, 2011, Wednesday

Anthony saw mom at noon today during visiting hours. As per dad, mom’s roommate at the hospital was “evicted.” Evidently, the roommate and the roommate’s children were doing drug deals from the hospital room!! You really can’t make this stuff up!! Mom was fine thank God. There was an aide posted at her side all night because her roommate was out of control last night as well. Anthony said that mom cried twice and said she wanted to go home.
Dad and mom watched TV and talked and read the newspaper together all afternoon. When I came, mom was eating dinner---or I should say, staring at her dinner. Dad said the aide said mom had a big breakfast but little lunch. Soooo….I made mom eat dinner. I told her she needs to eat to get strong and healthy. She made silly mocking faces at me and laughed. She is too of her dinner going to eat any of her dinner. She said she wasn’t hungry and made faces like she was seriously in pain---but then she grinned and said, “But I’ll eat some potato chips if you buy them for me…” We laughed and laughed. She ate all her dinner (after much negotiating and laughter). She asked me what I was typing and I told her it was her life story that I am putting into a book. Mom’s reply: “Oh yeah, then I’ll sue you!” and she laughed so hard!! She is a character.
Mom read the wristband we made her and asked, “Hey how do you know when it’s 5 minutes before the miracle?” and smirked. I told her, that’s just it; you don’t know when the miracle will happen so you just have to treat every minute like it’s the one before the miracle. Mom said, “Oh…how deep” and made a silly face! We laughed and laughed. She was in a comical mood for sure. I asked her who the miracle is and she said, “You are because you help so many people.” I told her that SHE was the miracle, not me.
After dinner, we played some math games---addition and subtraction of numbers 1-30. Mom didn’t know 20-10 or 20-11, but she knew almost every other math problem. We did this orally. Mom asked me to explain how to arrive at the correct answers. It is still as though she thinks in “wholes” and can’t understand the “parts.” She arrives at an answer without being able to understand how she came up with the answer.
Mom seemed out of breath on and off tonight. Not terribly so, but definitely out of breath. I asked for a list of the medications she is on. I asked to speak with mom’s doctor earlier today but the doctor wasn’t available. I was told that the doctor would call me. I want to ask about the results of the blood work and when mom will be released. Mom’s blood pressure was 138 over 69 and her temp was 99.9 at 7:30 p.m.
We called cousin Madeline, Claudia, Anthony Michael, and Sammy and talked on the phone with them. To some extent, mom’s voice is getting stronger. Everyone heard her well. We did some exercises of all mom’s limbs after that. Mom followed all the commands I gave her well. Mom stretched and bent her joints (arms and legs and fingers and toes…). She asked if she could get physical therapy here. I told her I would ask.
Mom and I talked and whispered and prayed before I left.
“He will give His angels charge over thee.” Psalm 91:11
