Hi everyone,
Mom is still in the hospital. Dad started the day with mom and stayed with her all day, since we are all back to work and school.
We heard form the urologist today. Mom has a kidney stone in the urethra (excuse me if I don’t have the correct name), which is a tube that goes from her kidney to her bladder. This is backing up the urine and causing an infection. They aren’t sure yet if the infection is in her blood. Tomorrow morning they will insert a tube to bypass where the stone is to drain the kidney. They will test what is voided and determine exactly what bacteria to treat. They will then give her a specific antibiotic. In a few weeks they will blast the stone with ultrasound. She will be able to leave the hospital in a few days. Notice I didn’t say return to her facility? Well, we were told by the facility that if she isn’t released today or tomorrow than she looses her room. We were told to clean out mom’s room tonight to be safe (that nothing gets lost, etc.). Well, Kathy, Anthony, Con, John, and I were all at work so we went into planning mode. Operation “Pack Mom’s Room” had to begin. I got out of work first so I went to the hospital to see if she could be released today or tomorrow (this was before I heard from the doctor). Once I found out that she was NOT going to be released today or tomorrow, I called John. John, Jean, Dad, Sam and Gina were available (Con had to take Anthony Michael somewhere). They took boxes and Jean and dad’s cars to pack up the room. John is great in a crisis. He is always level headed and driven. He and the kids and dad packed the entire room in no time. Anyone that has ever been to mom’s room knows how much stuff we have. It is overwhelming! Dad talked to the head of the facility and he assured dad that they would try to give her a room when she is released. It basically all comes down to money. They can’t collect money from medicare if she isn’t there so they can’t save a room.
I stayed with mom and she ate dinner and we talked. Mom kept asking about what was wrong with her and what was going to happen. I told her everything. The crazy thing is that she was so upset that she had a kidney stone! A kidney stone?! Are you kidding me? She has been through sooooo much that it was almost funny that she was so upset about a kidney stone.
Mom asked for specific channels to be put on the TV. She actually asked me if the clock on the wall was an analog? I made her repeat it several times because I couldn’t believe the question. I even put my hand over her stoma so I could hear her clearly. She also said thank you for all our family is doing (she said, “You kids”). She also said she is sorry for being such a bother for being in the hospital for a kidney stone. (OK, I know I am beating a dead horse BUT…a KIDNEY STONE?) This is nothing in the scope of things. I keep telling her she is no bother.
Mom asked for the food network and so I change the channel for her. I said goodnight and mom said, "I hate it when you all leave at night." I reassured her that dad would be there tomorrow afternoon and we would see her tomorrow as well. I gave her a kiss and left.
Peace and be well,
~Claud
