I started the day with mom. She was in a good mood this morning, no crying! I set her up for her breakfast and put her hearing aid in her ear. We are still waiting for her other hearing aid to be fixed. Of course she gave me a hard time drinking her prune juice! I got her fresh ice water in her pitcher and in her insulated cup and she drank it and always says the same thing, "this is the best water!" It has become part of our routine. I set her up for the day with a crossword puzzle, magazines, and a pumpkin craft. I always leave our numbers and the phone.
Dad and Anthony and Kathy came to see mom at different times, but they overlapped at some point. Dad and Anthony had mom stand up. It took longer for her to stand today than yesterday. KAthy thought that mom wasn't in a good mood. The past few days she has greeted her with a big smile and a phrase about being so happy to see her, but today she barely looked up from her newspaper. Dad thought she might be mad at him for coming late (I doubt it - dad is too hard on himself).
I got to mom late this evening and she didn't even have dinner yet. Dinner came very late. She had a turkey sandwich, cauliflower soup (she picked out the veggies) and salad. She ate well. We barely cleaned up from dinner and the CNA came in to put her to bed. I stayed in the room and noticed that they weren't putting the "bed pad" on the bed that they usually put. They folded a sheet and put it over the bolster staps. It was too short and the straps were exposed. I didn't want the straps to rub on mom's legs all night. When I asked about the pad I was told that they only had 11 pads and 20 beds (not MY problem!) so I said I would go downstairs to the nursing supervisor to see if she had any more. With that one of the CNA's said she might be able to find one and left the room and returned with a pad. I didn't want her to take it from someone else, but she said she didn't. She said she went to another unit to get one. Either way, someone is going to be without a pad. I spoke to the nursing supervisor when I left.
I sat with mom and watched TV. She was commenting on the program. We had a very quiet and peaceful visit. We held hands and watched TV. I stayed late tonight because we were watching chopped and they were cooking sea urchin! Mom kept saying how do you cook sea urchin? I had to stay to see who won!
I said a prayer and kissed mom on the head and left.
Peace and Be Well,
~Claud
