Mom’s update Monday, October 3, 2011
I started the day with mom and she was already up in the bed with breakfast half eaten. I said my usual, “Good morning morning glory!” and the day began. I brought oatmeal with me and mom was more interested in MY oatmeal than her own. I put her hearing aids in and set up her room. I went gave her fresh ice water (her favorite) and we ate together. At one point, I put her Fiber One in her oatmeal and she said, “Can you spare it?” She then said, “Who use to say that?” I told her Grammy (her mom) and she laughed. I try to mention that Grammy has been gone for 10 years now (she gets confused as to who is alive and who is dead). I also mentioned grandpa and how he has been gone for almost 30 years! Mom started to cry and said, “I keep forgetting they are gone. I thought they were still alive.” It was a brief cry. There are two people that are very close to mom who passed away while she was not aware – my dad’s cousin and a friend from the firehouse. We still don’t know when a good time would be to tell her. All I know is now is not the time. I don’t want to distract her from making progress with walking; maybe when she comes home.
After breakfast, I cleaned off her tray and then took out a few worksheets to leave on her tray with a pen and pencil. I started one with her and she worked hard to get the answer. Her handwriting is really coming along. I am amazed that she consistently has difficulty making certain letters and numbers. I will work on those in isolation. I left the phone on her tray.
Anthony came to see mom. I didn’t get a chance to speak with him, but I am sure he did some physical things with her. Anthony always works on mom’s legs and having her stand up using the walker.
Dad came to see mom. Dad talked to her PT and he said she did well in PT. This evening when she was placed on the lift she put her feet where they belong all by herself and grabbed the bars in just the right spots and lifted herself up. One of the nurses was watching and commented to dad how great she is doing.
Con, Anthony Michael and Samantha came to mom. She ate dinner. Mom ate pizza, salad and blueberry cake. She ate her whole dinner. They watched TV and talked. Mom told them she was upset that dad had to leave. They shared how there day went. Mom was placed into the bed. Mom was tired early and she kept asking for dad. They kiss her goodnight and left.
Peace and be well,
Claudia
