Mom Update, November 1, 2011, Tuesday

Mom’s update Tuesday, November 1, 2011

I started the day with mom and she was up and eating breakfast. I needed to get gas in the morning so I was 10 minutes later than I usually am. She was not in the bed right. If you don’t put the bed reclined all the way down and then physically lift her so her head almost touches the headboard, than when they raise the bed she isn’t bending at the waist and it is very uncomfortable. This is how she was this morning. The bed also wasn’t raised all the way up so she was practically laying down to eat. When mom saw me she started to cry and said, “I am so glad you are here, I can’t reach anything!” I had stopped on my way to get gas and picked two slices of grilled Boar’s Head turkey for her. It was a good thing because all she had was a little bit of scrambled egg and oatmeal. I pulled the tray away and fixed her in the bed. I raised the bed and fixed her oatmeal with applesauce and fiber one. I then got her ice water and of course started to pour her prune juice when it spilled on her tray. I lost half of it! Mom cracked up and had a smile from ear to ear. She was happy I spilled it. Although we go at it when prune juice is involved, when Jean went last week she told him she had to drink her prune juice! After breakfast I set up her tray with some fine motor task and mom looked at me and said, “How am I suppose to do this?” and showed me her brace on her hand. Oh Yea! I replaced them with magazines and a book. I also gave her the journal to write in and a pencil and pen.

Con and Anthony came next. Anthony said she was in bed late today. She took a shower. She went to OT right after. At first when they came to get her they said, “Oh we will take her later if she has company,” but Anthony said, “No take her.” Anthony went with her downstairs and sat down the hall for 20 minutes and then Anthony went to the OT/PT room and saw mom sitting by herself doing nothing and he waited until he saw someone and asked what is going on? The OT said, “Oh we are going to bring her back to the room so we can work with her in the room later.”

Dad came just before lunch and he said that they came to take mom after lunch to take her to OT/PT and that she was there for and hour and a half. I can’t figure them out! They make us crazy! They ordered and received the new brace for mom’s hand. It is not the brace that the neurologist who gave her the Botox shot wanted. It goes on the top of her hand and not the bottom. It doesn’t separate the fingers or make her fingers lay flat. When mom returned to the room from OT Con and Anthony watched food network and talked about the shows. They had mom write in the blue book. (when I got there in the evening breakfast and lunch were filled out).

Kathy came next and had mom write in her journal. Mom wrote about how I woke her up and what she had for breakfast and lunch. She also wrote who came to visit. It wasn’t very legible. Kathy had to write under mom’s passage so you could understand what she wrote. Kathy commented that mom was writing in script a few months ago and now she was very illegible.

I came later in the evening and she was just about to eat dinner. Her dinner came and I brought wonton soup for myself so I could eat with her. She kept trying to put her fork in my soup. I gave her a wonton and she kept asking me what it was and what do you call it when you order it? After dinner I had her write in the memory book. She wrote all in capitals but to me it was legible. It wasn’t in a straight line but each word could be read. Short-term memory is a real problem. She could only remember what she had for dinner if I prompted her. They put her in bed and mom fell asleep for about a half hour. Part of me thinks that I should leave while she is sleeping and part of me worries that she will wake up and I will be gone. I waited and she woke up by herself. I kissed her and said a prayer and left shortly after she woke up.

Peace and Be Well,

~Claud
